In this scene Beowulf is engaged in a battle for his life with the monster named Grendel. Because of the highly religious society at the time, Grendel was portrayed as a descendant of the biblical character Cain. The citizens of Hrothgar's kingdom found many similarities between these two. However, the main one was that they were both viewed and treated as outcasts. They both spent all of their time roaming around in the darkness filled with hatred towards others. This battle occurred when Grendel attempted to attack and kill Beowulf as he had done to one of Beowulf's soldiers and many others before that. This time however, Grendel would not succeed. Beowulf turned out to be more than Grendel could handle. Beowulf literally ripped Grendel's arm clean off his shoulder blade. The battle ended with Beowulf killing Grendel and putting an end to his murderous ways.

Here Beowulf is engaged in a battle with The Hag who was the mother of Grendel. After killing her son, The Hag was determined to bring revenge against those responsible for his death. This was a very serious and intense battle. Despite numerous attempts Beowulf had a very difficult time defeating The Hag. In fact, in parts of the battle she nearly killed him. It took a huge sword, believed to have been made by giants, to finally shift the battle once and for all in Beowulf's favor. This sword was so big and so powerful that Beowulf literally cut The Hag in half with it. This death along with Grendel's brought an end to the tyranny brought on by this family.
The dragon gets slayed...BUT...

In this epic battle Beowulf battles the Dragon. This battle occurred as Beowulf used it as a payment to the king. Many years have passed since Beowulf killed Grendel and his mother. 50 years to be exact. To put it directly, Beowulf was an old man of 80 years old and really to old to fight the Dragon. The Dragon used his strength and fire to maintain the upper hand in this battle. The Dragon actually used his fire breath to melt Beowulf's sword leaving Beowulf without a weapon except his bare hands to defend against the Dragon. In addition, the Dragon's blood was poisonous. This meant that with a bite death was certain. Despite his heroic efforts, Beowulf received a bite from the Dragon; a bite that would ultimately lead to his death. But, not before he killed the Dragon. Beowulf, despite the bite and being over matched, succeeded at killing the Dragon by cutting his neck. This was done with a sword he got from Wiglaf, who was one of the soldiers. Despite Beowulf's victories in the past Beowulf allowed his warrior code to push him into a battle he should not have fought. And while the Dragon was eventually killed one can only wonder what would have become of Beowulf had he not taken on this battle.
